In the same way that corporations and industries exploit natural resources irresponsibly and unsustainably, entertainment industries have exploited culture to the detriment of society. The reason we don’t notice or care is that the effects are not physical. No one is going to get lead poisoning from the 10th remake of a classic movie, no species are going to go extinct from another bastardized adaptation of a beloved novel, and yet still these things are indeed harmful. Western society in general sees most non-physical concepts like language, religion, or culture as unimportant or even nonexistent, and in doing so leave them vulnerable to exploitation and exhaustion like an unprotected rainforest atop a massive oil reserve.
