“I was perplexed as to what the usefulness of any of the arts might be, with the possible exception of interior decoration. The most positive notion I could come up with was what I called the canary-in-the-coal-mine theory of the arts. This theory argues that artists are useful to society because they are so sensitive. They are supersensitive. They keel over like canaries in coal mines filled with poison gas, long before more robust types realize that any danger is there. 

I wanted to be seen. That need dug into the heart of me. It felt good.

Tell me what it is to be the thing rooted in shadow. To be the thing not touched by light (no, that’s not it) - to not even need the light? I envy; I envy that.

I just can’t help it, living the way I’ve lived all my life. The only experiences I’ve had have been in crazy dreams of movie stars. When I met someone nice in real life, I feel as though I were in some kind of big bottle, as though I couldn’t touch the person, no matter how hard I tried.
